Hello, I’m Ed…

My Inhouse Lawyer was born out of a desire to provide SMEs with the kind of common sense legal advice I typically found was given by inhouse lawyers at some of the larger companies I worked in.  I love spending time with founders to understand their businesses, their ambitions and challenges and trying to connect them to people and opportunities I come across.

CV Highlights

Sarah Garrood

Head of Talent

Hello, I’m Sarah…

I worked for 30 years in publishing and creative environments – the last 20 years of these within the Pearson Group and was privileged to work with outstanding people (some of whom were inhouse lawyers!). Although relatively new to recruitment, I have been able to draw on my considerable experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams to good effect. I love finding the right person and helping to build great teams.

CV Highlights

At the Penguin Group, Sarah was Business Development Director with responsibility for new customer acquisition, project management, new product development, business trials and multi- million £ budgets. She worked with a vast range of clients from Shell to Disney, Dolly Parton’s Dollywood Foundation to Boots, Daily Mirror to FT all of which involved getting to understand other companies’ needs. After leaving Penguin, Sarah joined a small social enterprise (Timewise Foundation) to work on a funded project in Westminster which promoted flexible working and was then asked to join the recruitment team as a consultant. This not only gave her the chance to understand the recruitment business but also offered her an insight into the workings of start-up businesses. She recruited for a wide variety of businesses and disciplines including legal roles.

Personal

Sarah enjoys running, cycling, walking and recovers at her local Picturehouse cinema on a frequent basis.

John Nugent

Regional Director – South East

Hello, I’m John…

My work as a lawyer has taken me into the board rooms of Australia, Japan and the UK with a bit of Russian light relief thrown in. Knowing the commercial and operational side of a business as in-house counsel equips you to predict problems and create safeguards. And it is far more satisfying than sitting in a law firm office detached from the day to day realities of business. A simple explanation of what I do is “to predict the future and protect the business”.

CV highlights

I’ve combined a career in private practice with work as an in-house counsel for many years. I’ve sat on trading company boards (drinks, leisure, gaming and tourism, energy) and developed an affection for the risk takers and visionaries of the business world, those who drive our economies and create jobs and wealth.

Expertise

Corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions, supply contracts, manufacturing contracts, joint ventures and teaming, IT contracts, corporate governance and directors’ duties. Extensive experience drafting and negotiating domestic and international contracts for the supply of goods and services of all kinds.

  • Fintech – payments
  • Manufacturing
  • Transport/Shipping
  • Leisure, gaming and tourism
  • Insurance
  • Security

Personal

I follow rugby – Qld Reds, Wallabies, London Irish, Eddie’s England – cricket, boxing and ice hockey. In the warmer months I swim in the sea off Hove and now and then get involved in powerlifting.

Hello, I’m Caroline…

Working with SMEs has brought a completely new dimension to being a lawyer. No two days are the same, I love the variety and the buzz of activity. My clients are an amazing bunch. I really enjoy being on the journey with them, learning about their businesses, being able to give them access to the type of legal support usually only available to large companies and helping them find solutions to their commercial and legal problems.

CV Highlights

Caroline has been a corporate-commercial lawyer for over 25 years.  She spent over 13 years at Simmons & Simmons working on a wide range of commercial and corporate matters including joint ventures, agency and distribution agreements, supply contracts and company/asset sale and purchase agreements. Her desire to be closer to businesses made her move inhouse to Electronic Data Systems (subsequently acquired by HP) where she was in charge of negotiating and managing large managed services, IT outsourcing agreements and joint ventures from cradle to grave.

Caroline then spent 7 years at Colt Technology. As VP of Commercial Legal Affairs, she ran a team of 26 international lawyers, worked on Colt’s most high value/strategic deals and improved and simplified the team’s delivery of internal legal services. Caroline is bilingual (French/English) and is also a graduate Company Secretary with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA).

Expertise

A great breadth and depth of corporate and commercial expertise with special focus on technology and telecoms.

Hello, I’m Nicola…

There is no space for innovation where everyone thinks in the same way. One of the things I love about supporting SMEs as a portfolio general counsel is being able to make a unique contribution, in a way that really makes a positive difference to management. For me, it’s not just what you know, it’s how you approach things that matters…and that means having a client’s best interests at heart.

CV Highlights

Nicola has been supporting growing businesses as a lawyer for over 20 years. She worked in private practice before moving in-house, working with technology, biotech and pharma businesses, then set up her own legal services business in 2010. She has worked at a senior level in global businesses, has a good breadth of General Counsel experience, plenty of strategic and transactional exposure, and enjoys being properly hands-on with SMEs. Clients also like working with Nicola for her practical and personable approach.

Expertise

A great all-round generalist, with particular expertise in:
• Technology
• Life Sciences
• IP & transactional IP

Personal

Nicola lives in Hampshire in the South Downs, has grown-up kids, and is mad about the great outdoors, health and fitness.
