I love the buzz of working within an organisation and seeing things through from beginning to end. To me, being an inhouse lawyer is all about finding commercial and practical solutions to problems. I particularly enjoy client presentations and, in doing so, have earned a reputation for making the law simple, understandable and, believe it or not, fun!
Hello I'm Jonathan...
WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO
THE EXPERIENCE I BRING
I have been an inhouse lawyer for over 30 years and have worked with a diverse range of clients from SMEs to listed companies. I qualified as a barrister and started my career as an employment lawyer before moving Inhouse to a listed hotel company where I became Group General Counsel and Group Company Secretary. I was also Group Legal Director of the British Medical Association and more recently General Counsel at an international free trade and arbitral association in the agri-commodities sector. I have a particular interest in employment law, Alternative Dispute Resolution (I’m a qualified arbitrator and mediator) and corporate governance (with a focus on directors duties). I am delighted to have won a number of national Awards in 2020/2021 in respect of my arbitration and mediation work. Several years ago, I was directly involved, as a lawyer, in one of the leading court decisions involving directors duties – a case which reached (what is now) the Supreme Court. I have significant business experience and, amongst other things, I am currently the Chairman of the Finance and Risk Committee at a company engaged in the education sector.
WHEN I'M NOT WORKING
My passion is football – both playing (more goal hanging at my age !) and watching my local team – Colchester United, where I have been a season ticket holder for many years. I’m also a petrol head, having owned numerous classic cars (30 at the last count). My daily driver is 1964 Rover P4. Another passion is history, particularly, the First World War.
