I love the buzz of working within an organisation and seeing things through from beginning to end. To me, being an inhouse lawyer is all about finding commercial and practical solutions to problems. I particularly enjoy client presentations and, in doing so, have earned a reputation for making the law simple, understandable and, believe it or not, fun!
Hello I'm Jonathan...
WHY I LOVE WHAT I DO
THE EXPERIENCE I BRING
I have been an in house lawyer for over 30 years and have worked for a diverse range of clients, from SMEs to listed companies. I qualified as a barrister in 1990. In addition, I am also a qualified arbitrator and registered mediator. In the last year, I have been privileged to have received 4 national awards for my legal expertise and have previously been included in The Lawyer Magazine ‘Hot 100’ lawyers. I specialise in employment law, dispute resolution (arbitration and mediation) and commercial contracts and have lectured internationally on these subjects. My employment law experience is wide ranging and includes advice on disciplinary, grievance and dismissals, discrimination, TUPE, redundancy consultation, selection and implementation and the variation of contractual terms, amongst many other things! I also represent clients at Employment Tribunals and at the Employment Appeal Tribunal. During my career I have dealt with a number of high level, reported, legal cases in the courts including; breach of directors duties (in particular, the duties owed, by a non executive director, to their company), employment references (what is a ‘satisfactory reference’ and who decides?), race discrimination (overturning a then record award of compensation of £815k in the Supreme Court) and the extent to which an arbitrator must disclose an interest in arbitration proceedings”. I have extensive business, senior management and legal experience have worked as a General Counsel in a number of sectors, including insurance, leisure/hotel/retail, healthcare and, latterly, soft commodities. I am currently Chair of the Finance, Risk and Audit Committee of a company involved in the education sector.
WHEN I'M NOT WORKING
My passion is football – both playing (more goal hanging at my age !) and watching my local team – Colchester United, where I have been a season ticket holder for many years. I’m also a petrol head, having owned numerous classic cars (30 at the last count). My daily driver is 1964 Rover P4. Another passion is history, particularly, the First World War.
